Carroll Shelby and his business have undergone a few changes in the past couple of years. For one, the company was re-branded with its old name, Shelby American. Then rumors started swirling that Shelby was considering ditching superchargers in favor of a number of turbocharger projects. This included a rumored 1,000 horsepower twin-turbo GT500. Wouldn’t happen, right?
Wrong. Mustangs Daily reports that Shelby has been working in secret with Nelson Racing Engines on a secret project called “Code Red.” It is a street-legal 1,000 horsepower twin-turbo GT500.
Let that soak in for a second. Two of the big names in racing, Shelby and NRE, teaming up to produce a streetable 1,000 horsepower GT500. We’ve seen 1,000 horsepower GT500’s before, and we’ve seen twin-turbos on GT500’s as well. But never from the factory, and not with this crazy list of features.
We can start off with the dual fuel tanks, one for regular 91 octane that this car can run on, and one for racing fuel, which can let the engine spin up to 1,200 horsepower. The boost has been linked to the shifter and throttle, and when the boost goes up, the secondary fuel tank opens up sending a 50% mixture of race fuel through a second set of fuel injectors. Yes, Code Red has two sets of fuel injectors.
The turbochargers are both of the 61 mm variety, which feeds into an awesome-looking intake system. A Currie rear end is needed to hold that power, which arrives through a 4-inch aluminum driveshaft. A Shelby/Eibach suspension replace the factory components, and it gets a six-speed Transzilla transmission. It is an absolute monster.
America, meet your Bugatti Veyron killer.
