Project Boosted Coyote: Ford Racing Touring Catback by Borla

Project Boosted Coyote: Ford Racing Touring Catback by Borla

When you are building a car with the goal to attain 1000 wheel horsepower, selecting the right exhaust becomes a challenge. If the wrong exhaust is used, it will drone so bad at low engine speeds that you won’t want to drive the car, more importantly, it has the potential to affect the performance of the car and its abilities to lay down that four-figure power output.

When it came to selecting the exhaust system for Project Boosted Coyote, Ivans 2015 Mustang GT, he said: “I was looking for a muffler that could flow enough air and still keep the car ‘reasonably’ quiet. This is challenging with our combination.”

As it sits, Project Boosted Coyote is powered by a Livernois Motorsport Long-Block with a Whipple Gen 3 2.9-liter supercharger. It’s hooked to a 6r80 automatic transmission with Exedy Clutches and TCS billet Intermediate shaft. The rear end consists of BMRs complete S550 catalog of parts, Viking Crusader Shocks, G-Force Axles and Drive Shaft with Ford Performance rear end.

Ivan decided on the Ford Racing by Borla Touring System Catback exhaust.

The Touring Catback system is the milder of two offerings which come as a result of a collaboration between Ford Racing and Borla. The resulting catback system bolts directly to the factory catalytic converters, which keeps the vehicle emission compliant while providing an aggressive sound.

“The car has a nice and aggressive tone, but it is quite enough that my wife won’t complain when riding in it,” Ivan joked. He added, “the muffler keeps the tone down at low engine speeds without any drone, but it has a great aggressive sound when the throttle is wide open.”

The Touring series gets its mild growl from a large oval shape that allows for additional capacity and a little more baffling in the mufflers themselves to achieve a quieter ride.

The included X-Pipe not only helps increase power but also adds a loud raspy, race car growl to the sound of the exhaust with its “X” crossover pipe design. Meanwhile, the tips exit in the stock locations so no modifications are required to the rear bumper cover.

Additionally, the exhaust system utilizes the stock hangers, mounts, and comes with the necessary hardware.

As an added bonus, because the entire system has been constructed from mandrel bent 2.5-inch stainless steel, the Touring catback system is 30-pounds lighter than the stock Ford catback system. Consequently, it is perfect for track and drag racers looking to shed unwanted weight in the pursuit of quicker times.

The exhaust system has been designed as a direct bolt-on replacement for the coyote 5.0-liter 2015-2017 GT Fastback and Convertible Mustangs. It should only take about two hours from start to finish, using necessary hand tools and a lift or jack stands.

The Ford Racing Touring Catback is 50 state drive-by noise legal.
