One of the side effects of maximum traction in drag racing is the wheel stand. While it’s a great crowd-pleaser to the grandstands, it can cost the driver the race, let alone cause lots of damage once that ballistic wheelie comes back to earth. Afco Racing has addressed this concern for Mustang owners who put it all on the line at the strip with their new double-adjustable BIG GUN front struts for the 1979-2004 Mustang.
The key to successful drag racing is weight transfer, but in order to be effective you need to be able to fine tune your suspension. The double-adjustable struts put some of that adjustability into the front end providing better control of the wheelie. This allows you to focus on what’s important: getting through the traps with the quickest ET.
With 35 clicks of rebound control at the top, the BIG GUN is completely independent from the 22 compression adjustments, and allows you to control wheelies or you can back the valving off and make it a little softer to get better weight transfer. On the bottom side, the indexable compression adjuster will allow you to index the knob in three positioins to clear things like limiter straps.
Eric Saffell said, “On the compression side, we have our BNC valving to control the wheelie so when you come back down you don’t smack the oil pan or headers.” Their BIG GUN strut has the largest piston in the industry, and they developed this double-adjustable strut to answer the call from drag racers who already loved their rear shocks.
The strut gives better control and more adjustments to create a complete package for the Mustang, allowing for soft or firm adjustments whether you’re running drag slicks or radials.
