Mustang fans young and old will get their chance to take home a 2015 Mustang at this year’s North American International Auto Show. Not the full size version, but instead in the form of a snap together scale model of the car from toy maker Revell.
Scale model car building used to be a tremendous hobby for kids and adults. While it’s been replaced for many with video games, and other forms of entertainment, there are still many out there that enjoy building scale models, especially younger kids. It’s a great way to learn about cars, how things get put together, assembly, coordination, and following directions.
“For nearly 50 years, kids of all ages have been configuring and building their own personal full-size and small-scale Mustangs, and now they can build a new dream car and take it home,” said Steve Ling, Ford car marketing manager.
There will even be a special area where kids attending the show can assemble their model before taking it home with them. The kit itself only involves assembling a few pieces, and is less involved than most of the model car kits many of us built as kids. Revell and Ford have also made a video featuring a kind of creepy hipster-looking guy assembling the model with child-like enjoyment. Watch it if you must, but we’d say you and your kid can probably put this thing together without the video.
This is a cool idea to get a new generation interested in cars, and maybe even a hobby other than banging a controller and staring at a TV screen mindlessly for hours on end. It’s also a great promotion for youth and the new Ford Mustang.
