1979 represented the end of one Mustang era, and the beginning of a new one. The Mustang II, based on the Pinto chassis, was kicked to the curb in favor of the all-new “Fox body” design. Though all the same engines carried over, Ford celebrated the new body style by being the pace car for the Indianapolis 500 and selling over 10,000 replicas on the market.
One of those pace cars ended up on eBay. CarDomain found this little number, which ditches all the anemic stock engines in favor of an old school big block.
From the showroom floor, the 1979 Mustang could be had with one of three engines; the 88-horsepower four-cylinder, one of two six-cylinder engines (depending on when it was built, and both making right around 100 horsepower), or a 140 horsepower 5.0 V8. Yes, a 140 horsepower V8 engine was the top-of-the-line choice, though a 132 horsepower four-cylinder turbo was also introduced.
None of these engines even hold a candle to the majesty of the heavily modified 429 big block backed by a C6 transmission. That is the engine and transmission combo that found its way into this Pro Street Mustang. The interior has been spiced up with a full roll cage, and a narrow nine-inch rear end is connected to a four-link suspension. Huge slicks sit on nice wheels, and the overall presentation of this Mustang is superb, especially for a 30 year-old car. The winning bidder paid just a hair over $7,000, a really good deal for a really cool car.
