Reality TV host, Ty Pennington, with headline a new pilot for ABC during which they will auction a 1968 Shelby GT500KR to the highest bidder. In conjunction with Heritage Auctions, the event is to be filmed on Saturday, April 16, on board The Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA. The auction is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. Pacific time.
Part of the proceeds will benefit the Carroll Shelby Foundation. With only 31,000 original miles on the odometer, the Highland Green on black Shelby is one of just 318 GT500KRs built in that color combination. Still retaining its original 428 Super Cobra Jet engine, additional equipment includes an automatic transmission, air conditioning, an oil cooler, tilt steering wheel and AM/FM radio.
ABC and Heritage Auctions approached the Carroll Shelby Foundation rgarding the auction. “Our team admires Ty Pennington and his approach to helping others,” said Jenni Shreeves, executive director of the Carroll Shelby Foundation. “Our mission is simple: to provide support to children and medical institutions battling life-threatening diseases and promote continuing education for today’s youth.”
The Shelby GT500KR is also equipped with period-correct smog equipment, including the air cleaner snorkel that is rarely found on this type of vehicle. During a 1980s restoration, reproduction Shelby ten-spoke wheels were added to the muscle car, which is documented in the official Shelby registry.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to be offering the magnificent Shelby Mustang as part of this auction,” commented Greg Rohan, president of Heritage Auctions. “The advance buzz in the Shelby community has made it abundantly clear that this car is a gem and will be highly prized by its next owner.”
