1988 was the last year of the Fox body-based Mercury Cougars, and arguably the last year that any Cougar retained any pretense of performance. Today these cars are popular alternatives for Mustang fans who want something a bit different, but with the wide availability of aftermarket parts that the Mustang enjoys. Another plus is the plush interior that the Cougar enjoys over its less-refined pony car cousin, which made it popular with older folks still looking to burn some rubber.
It doesn’t look like this particular 1988 Mercury Cougar, found on eBay with just over 5,000 miles, has ever burnt any rubber though. In fact, it might even still be wearing the original tires, as well as just about every option available you can fit on to one car.
Gold rims? Check. Golden Cougar head above the 5.0 badge? Check. Two-tone paint job? Check. Non-functional luggage rack and hardcase-enclosed spare tire clinging to the trunk? Check and check. It’s all there ladies and gentlemen, looking as good as the day it rolled off the assembly line. The seller claims that the owner of this car is a retired Ford parts manager with 40 years experience and “this was his baby.” The car was apparently even parked on a red carpet in a heated garage.
This is definitely a car designed more for cruising than carving corners, and while a performance suspension package was an option, Ford never offered the high-output 5.0 V8 engine, which packaged 225 horsepower. Instead the Cougar made due with a detuned 150 horsepower 5.0 engine and an automatic transmission, as the five-speed manual was dropped as an option in 1987. But don’t let that discourage you from bidding on this awesome ride. Who knows how many low-mileage Cougars are really left?
