While a whole generation of Family Guy fans know Adam West as the kooky mayor of Quahog, there are those of us who can remember Mr. West from the original Batman television show. Weird and crazy don’t even begin to describe this long-running series, though for car fans there was one star that really stuck out; the original Batmobile, based on a Lincoln Futura.
This car was once lost to the world, but it has returned, fully restored to eBay. Alas, the listing has come to an end, but we can still ogle it for a few more days and read up on the history of this classic car.
The original Batmobile was built by the venerable George Barris, though it started life as a concept vehicle built by Ford called the Lincoln Futura. After finishing the auto show circuit, it went on to be featured in the Hollywood movie It Started With A Kiss, starring Debbie Reynolds. It took Barris and his team just three weeks and $1,000 to convert the Futura into the Batmobile. With a 429 Cobra Jet engine under the hood, its got some “oomph” as well as a host of Batfeatures.
Among the doodads and gadgets is a working Batphone, smokescreen, and sirens. The Bat Turbo Thruster shoots 25-feet of flames, and there’s a Bat Crime Computer sitting in the trunk. It’s also been signed by the illustrious Adam West. Alas, this particular example (there were nine Batmobiles built in total) had a broken frame and rough body before being restored. It cost over $150,000 to bring it back to life. But not many people can claim they own a real Batmobile. Then again, it might be cheaper to just buy the official replica…
