It can be easy to lose yourself in the deafening roar of a Mustang’s powerful V8 engine, especially on a gorgeous day winding your way through the forest roads around a pristine lake. So one can hardly blame a young driver for wanting to stretch the legs of his pony a little bit, maybe going a little to fast or drifting around some tight corners in an effort to experience everything this muscle car can do. Unfortunately, this is where too many tragic stories end, with a little hot-dogging resulting in a totaled car and another young driver dead.
But that is not where this story ends. Rather, the unnamed 20-year old driver of this bright yellow Mustang did drive it off a cliff. But rather than plummeting into the lake below, the Lake County News reports that this particular Mustang clung to some rocks just above a watery grave, and the young driver survived with no injuries.
This S197 Mustang was cruising around the Clear Lake shoreline in Lucerne, California when the driver “lost control” coming around a left hand corner, according to witnesses. The driver was heading eastbound around 7 pm when he lost traction at the rear wheels, sending the car careening into the steep, rocky shoreline of Clear Lake.
And that should have been the end of the story, save for a randomly placed tree that kept the car from plunging into the lake just a few feet away. The driver survived with no injuries, though we imagine those rocks probably took a toll on the underside of the Mustang. However, the car was salvaged too, via a tow truck, and hopefully our young driver has learned a very important lesson when it comes to driving fast near large bodies of water.
