There are many Mustangs of legend out there, some left to rot in fields and sheds dotting the countryside, others hidden away, waiting for a proper restoration and another chance to rip down the drag strip in record time. One such car is the Excalibur Mustang, a project car built by Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords during the early 1990’s. After running at drag strips for a decade, this hot hatchback disappeared from view for the past ten years.
But Bangshift reports that the Excalibur Mustang is being brought out of retirement for some big horsepower upgrades. It seems like the right time to bring this original 5.0 into the 21st century.
The Mustang was bought new by eventual Johnny Hunkins who bought it in 1987. In 1991 he became Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords and took his slightly-used Mustang, and turned it into a 10-second strip monster. Excalibur was used to test new 5.0 engine parts and it ran for about seven years, from 1992 until 1999. Since then, much of the car has disappeared, and what is left is a race-prepped shell that is missing almost everything.
Hunkins has grand plans for this shell of a car though, including a possibly-ProCharged big-block engine. Since there is no chassis really to speak of, a new suspension system will be incorporated, and the Mustang will likely be set up for small tire racing. A new Coyote 5.0 option would suit this classic Mustang better if you asked us, but they aren’t, and it’ll likely be a cool project no matter how they do it. We’ll keep an eye out for the finished version later on this year. It seems true then, that some cars just never let you go.
