Plenty of us can turn a wrench on a Ford Mustang, and there are many of us who have even built an engine or two in our day. But how many of us can claim to have built…actually built a Ford Mustang from scratch? Only those souls employed at Ford’s Flat Rock Assembly Plant can, where the Mustang is built by the hundreds on a daily basis. 

Now you can take a tour of this factory thanks to National Geographic’s “Megafactories” television show. With nearly 45 minutes of footage from inside the Flat Rock Plant, this is one video you’ll want to pull up a chair and pop some popcorn to watch. But it is a very cool look at the birth of our favorite American pony car.

The tour follows the entire production process, from stamped steel to final assembly. It is a far cry from the labor-intensive factories of just 50 years ago, where human hands assembled nearly every single piece of the Mustang. These days robots do most of the heavy lifting, though the human element is far from removed from the assembly process.

It’s an in-depth look at the modern assembly process for Ford automobiles, which has become highly mechanized, though still relies heavily on skilled human hands. It is kind of amazing to see a bunch of blank steel plates coming together to form an iconic car, and for Mustang fans of any age, this video is a must-watch. Enjoy!
