We all love a good Hollywood action film or well put-together car commercial, but have you ever given any thought to just HOW they put those incredible driving shots and sequences together? It requires a lot of very specialized (codeword for expensive) camera equipment, from stabilizers and polarizers to boom cranes and chase vehicles. But how can anyone keep up with a fast-paced chase scene involving performance faster than your average pickup?
For veteran photographer and filmmaker Tim Damon, the solution was obvious; a Ford F-150 SVT Raptor, crew cab of course. Fox News reports that Damon converted his Raptor into a drool-worthy chase truck, which turns out to be perfect for the job.
Damon, a car fanatic himself, claims to own around 30 vehicles. These include such staples as a ‘66 Lincoln Continental, an Aston Martin Vanquish, and a ‘67 Pontiac Grand Prix. But while his daily driver may be a Mercedes S63 AMG, his work truck is the Ford Raptor. Damon uses the truck to film top-notch car commercials, and is widely regarded as one of the best in the business.
As it turns out, Damon also runs Filmotechnic which outfits camera cars with sophisticated filming equipment including booms, cameras, and other equipment. But the Raptor is his favorite, because he says that 75% of what he needed to do to convert it into a filming vehicle was already there. Even in rough terrain, the shots came out perfect, and the beefy transmission has proven capable of taking the punishment his camera crews dish out. This is a big step up from the Ford Focus ST Wagon camera car we found a few weeks ago.
So there you have it; no matter what variation or form it takes, the Ford F-150 always finds a way to do some serious work.
