If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind car that nobody else on Earth owns – you’ve come to the right place. Unfortunately this 1970 Torino King Cobra never made it into actual production, but its provenance is such that the seller is looking for a hefty sack of pennies to make it yours.
Our research shows that this particular car was built in 1969 and shipped to Bud Moore Engineering in a white finish with a Boss 429 engine and four-speed transmission. The owner claims to have an original bill of sale on the machine, along with dated photos. Ford Racing historian John Craft says that Ford built at least two and possibly three prototype King Cobra cars – this one has the convex rear window, and the car was last sold at Barrett-Jackson in 2001 for $97,200 – a steal when you consider the price that the current owner is looking to get for the machine.
Unique bodylines and a Boss 429...what's not to like?
According to Craft, this car had a hand-stamped VIN and a 1969 data plate on the door and was marked XO-429, but the photos in the ad do not show any of that documentation. One thing is for sure – we certainly wish Ford had decided to build this thing. It’s got a neat look that’s different from anything the other automakers were producing at that time, and we love the extended nose.
Our research also shows that one of the reasons the car didn’t make it to production was how light the rear end was at speed, and it was killed for sure when the Ford racing budget disappeared at the tail end of 1969. A shame, we say. Worth $500k? You decide.
