The Boss 429 commands a legendary status among car lovers for its extreme rarity and interesting history. Initially created only to satisfy NASCAR homologation rules, this version of the Mustang was powered by its namesake engine that was born out of competition to the reigning champion, Chrysler’s 426 HEMI. Recently, Carbuzz found one of them for sale in Willemstad, Holland, and it comes with a price tag of nearly half a million dollars–$456,190, to be exact–for, among other factors, its pristine appearance and jaw-dropping odomoter reading of 1.
Ford had decided back in the day that the engine to compete against the HEMI would be developed from the 385. A local fabrication shop, Kar Kraft, was commissioned to handle the task of redesigning not only the engine, but also the car–428 Cobra Super Jet Mach 1–and in the process make a proper challenger to the worthy rival MOPARs for the Grand National races.
Modifications made to the 428 included widening the shock towers and pushing out the inner fenders, as well as chopping and displacing the front suspension mounts. A rigid sway bar was added to the rear, and finally a manual hood scoop was welded to the hood.
Back in its day, Ford advertised the 429 as making only 375 hp–a complete lie, as we all know. Numerous dyno tests have since put the car well into the 500s, with some claiming it could even reach 600. Initially, the false number was a ruse by Ford, done in order to get people to buy the car without fear of their insurance companies levying a hefty fee.
But when all was said and done, Ford only made 859 of these musclebound Mustangs. So it’s great to see such a rare car get five-star respect and maintenance, especially from outside the States. Let’s just hope this one winds up in the right hands; a Dutch native like Rutger Hauer would be just fine.

Considering its scarcity and location, is the price right for this beefed-up Stang? Or should the seller drop the charge like a hot Dutch oven? Feel free to comment below.
