Bargain Find: 47,000-Mile 1985 Ford Mustang SVO For Sale

svo-1In the early 1980s, American automakers were struggling to deliver cars that could perform up to customer expectations, while still meeting increasingly-stringent government MPG standards. In order to keep the Ford Mustang viable, the Blue Oval dropped a four-cylinder turbo engine into the Mustang SVO, an act that has not been repeated in the pony car’s history.

The Mustang SVO was made for just a few years in the early 80s, and today clean, low-mileage models are hard to come by. Car sales site Bring-A-Trailer has an exclusive on a 1984 Mustang SVO with less than 47,000 miles on the odometer. This car is in great condition for its age, and it would make an excellent show car or addition to an entry-level car collection.

Located in Dennis, Massachusetts, the current owner bought this ‘84 SVO with just 29,000 miles on the odometer. Most everything on the car is original, and the body is straight without any dings or dents. The seller says that the motor runs strong, the transmission shifts smoothly, and everything except the air conditioning works. It’s a pretty-close-to-perfect SVO.

What’s more, it is definitely a future classic, especially with Ford slated to bring a four-cylinder turbo engine back into the mix for the 2015 Mustang. The Mustang SVO was sold for just three model years, from 1984 through 1986, and packed as much as 205 horsepower, only slightly less than the 5.0 V8. Unfortunately it was also very expensive, stickering in at almost $16,000 depending on options in 1980s money, about $6,000 more than the Mustang GT.

Less than 10,000 Mustang SVOs were sold between 1984 and 1986, and many have had their engine bays raided, or have been converted into V8 drag cars. While unlikely to ever be worth Shelby-money at auction, as recently as 2010 bidders have been willing to shell out up to $20,000 for clean, numbers-matching cars. The example up for grabs on BaT is definitely more of a car show car in our opinion, and it is definitely a conversation starter no matter where you go. For $6,200, would you bring a turbo Mustang back to the streets?
