You don’t have to be wealthy to be a car collector. We all probably know one or two people who have a yard full of half-rotted husks of cars that, though not valuable, were perhaps once cool or in vogue. But if you’re really into the idea of collecting and preserving a piece of automotive history, you’d better have deep pockets, especially if you want to get a piece of car dealer Jim Click’s high-end collection of performance Fords.

Click has accumulated, among other things, a 1966 Ford GT40, both a 1969 and 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Trans Ams, two 1964 Shelby 289 Cobras and a 1966 Shelby GT350.They’re all going on sale this summer at RM Sotheby’s annual auction event in Monterey, California.

The most valuable piece of this collection is undoubtedly the 1966 Ford GT40, one of just 31 Mark I GT40s and valued at somewhere between $3.75 million and $4.25 million. That spread alone is more than most car collections, and we’re only just getting started, as there’s also the the 1964 Shelby Cobra “Competition” that’s among the winningest Cobras on the planet, having never even recorded a DNF.

That Shelby is expected to fetch $2.2 million in Monterey. If that’s a bit too rich for your tastes though, the other ‘64 Shelby Cobra is estimated to bring in “only” between $1 million and $1.4 million.

Bringing us to a trio of classic Mustangs that round out this one-of-a-kind auction, spearheaded by a 1966 Shelby GT350. Specced for SCCA B-production, this Shelby should bring up to $450,000, and will sell without reserve. Rounding out the collection are the two Boss 302 Trans Ams, both prepped by the famous Kar Kraft and both ready to go racing any day. The blue ‘69 Boss was raced for Shelby by Dan Gurney, Peter Revson, George Follmer and A.J. Foyt., while the yellow 1970 Boss was a member of Bud Moore’s racing team. Both Mustangs are valued between $1 million and $1.3 million.

It’s the kind of car collection that takes a lifetime to assemble, but only a day to part out. We guess Click has decided he’d rather have more room in his garage, and a fat stack of cash, instead of this pantheon of performance Fords.
