Rare Swiss-Export Shelby GT500 Heads To Auction

Anytime a vintage Shelby GT500 goes across the auction block it always draws the attention of not just the Ford enthusiasts, but everyone in the room. This Saturday at Mecum Kissimmee when Lot S142 crosses the blocks, the entire room will definitely be paying attention. This 1969 Shelby GT500 Convertible is one of just 355 produced, but that is not what makes this one really rare.

This GT500 features an extensive amount of documentation, a key factor in bringing big money at auction. The paperwork includes a Marti report, an owners manual, a copy of the original build sheet, and all the export paperwork that confirms it was sent to Switzerland.

What really makes it special is the fact that this car was exported to Switzerland and is the only example to be originally shipped there — that makes it one of one. The car features a speedometer and odometer that both read in kilometers, on which the car shows 12,000 (7,450 miles), making it not only rare as an export, but also a low-mile example of the Shelby lineage.

Painted in gorgeous Candy Apple Red, this Shelby Mustang is quite a bit different from its standard Mustang brother. The most unique exterior features are the fiberglass front end which includes five functional air inlets. The rear of the car also features a unique duck tail spoiler and a center-exit exhaust.

The car went through an extensive rotisserie restoration by Micheal Paremsky at Micheal’s Auto Restoration in Winter Haven, Florida. This rare export GT500 is estimated by Mecum to bring between $250,000 and $300,000. You can check it out for yourself here before the car is scheduled to go across the auction blocks on Saturday in Kissimmee, Florida.

This GT500 features its original, matching-numbers Ram Air 428 Cobra Jet. Factory rated at 335 horsepower, it puts its power to the ground via an automatic transmission and a 3.50 Traction-Lok differential.

About the author

Jeff Southard

Growing up with a dad who loved Corvettes, I was destined to be a gearhead from day one. Beyond that, my dad owned an auto parts business for over 25 years. There, I learned the automotive basics as a child, then began my professional career working there after high school. From Corvettes and Superbirds to Hemis and Cobra Jets, my dad has owned a little of everything over the years, so I've had my chance to get some quality seat time behind the wheel of some rare, unique, and sometimes, just odd automobiles. I have owned my share of toys, including over 20 Mustangs. I guess to make a long story short, if you look up "car crazy" you will probably find my photo listed pretty close to it!
