While most of the press has already fled the huge showroom that is Cobo Hall, there is still a bit of housecleaning to do in terms of news. While Shelby American may not command the attention (or have as big a booth) as some of the major automakers, there is no doubt that the cars they have to show are every bit as worthy of the attention.
While we’ve already covered the Shelby-version of the Ford Focus ST, the famed aftermarket automaker brought another show car to Cobo Hall; the GT500 Widebody.
Though it is not a stand-alone vehicle per se, the new widebody kit was modeled after the custom, one-off kit created for the Shelby GT500 Cobra kit car built as a tribute to Carroll Shelby. What makes this kit special is that anybody with a 2011+ Mustang can create a Shelby tribute car of their own, without having to take a second mortgage on their house.
Officially known as the “Wide Body Street Edition” kit, this Shelby widebody kit also has performance implications too. With new GT500 Shelby Super Snakes creating 800 horsepower or more, the wider bodykit allows for wider tires, enabling a whole lot more grip when it comes to race time.
After all, these widebody kits started out on the racetrack as a way to improve handling, but now you don’t have to buy a Shelby, to look like you’re driving a Shelby. This is good news for posers the world over.
