When Ford re-introduced the world to the BOSS 302 Mustang back in late 2010, car enthusiasts were amped for the return of a legendary name plate. The BOSS 302 Mustang, with its 444 horsepower and track-focused suspension tuning, along with the even hotter Laguna Seca Edition, quickly found fans among both drivers, the press, and collectors. 

Unfortunately the BOSS’ party is all over, at least for now. Edmunds reports that the last 2013 BOSS 302 Mustang rolled off of assembly lines earlier this year, and it is unknown yet if Ford will bring the BOSS 302 name back when the new S550 Mustang platform goes on sale for the 2015 model year.

Ford reportedly reached its self-imposed limit of 4,000 2013 BOSS 302 Mustangs earlier this year, most likely just before 2014 Mustang production began. Ford also made 4,000 2012 BOSS 302 Mustangs, and of those 750 from each model year were Laguna Seca Editions. That means total BOSS 302 production reached just 8,000 cars. So while it’s still a small percentage of total Mustang production, the BOSS 302 isn’t exactly “Cobra-R rare”, meaning you’re likely to see these cars on the streets and at shows for years to come.

A two-year production run was planned for the current BOSS program from the outset, just like the original BOSS 302 Mustangs of 1969-70, and with so many other famous name plates and packages to choose from, it’s conceivable that Ford may just shelf the BOSS name for another 40 or so years. Then again, with the popularity of the new BOSS, maybe Ford won’t keep fans waiting too long to bring the nameplate back.
