The 2015 Ford Mustang was one of the most-anticipated cars of the new millennium, and spy photographers went to great lengths in order to get the shots that we all wanted to see. Yet Ford still had to take the Mustang out onto the road for real-world testing, requiring the use of extensive camoflauge to keep the new look of this highly-anticipated muscle car under wraps. Literally.

This next video, as part of the Mustang countdown, gives a behind-the-scenes look at what Ford engineers had to do to keep the auto paparazzi at bay.

The video opens with Mustang chief engineer Dave Pericak talking about how spy photographers will go to great lengths, including hanging out in trees, to get a look at the new Mustang. This posed a problem for Ford, which wanted to keep the looks under wraps. Their solution was to use less-rigid lightweight vinyl pieces to hide the shape and look of the 2015 Mustang. But the initial batch of camouflage was too revealing, and engineers had to come up with something better to hide the shape of the ‘Stang.

But the auto paparazzi were not easily dissuaded, with some even going so far as to hire planes to fly over Ford test tracks. Ford did a pretty good job keeping the look something of a mystery, although some of the artists we worked with leading up to the reveal appeared to have been very close indeed. Still, it wasn’t until the final weeks before the reveal that leaks really started to come out. Ford did well at keeping this one a secret.
