Back when George Bush Sr. was still in the Oval Office and Johnny Carson was still host of The Tonight Show, the Ford Explorer made its world debut as the replacement for the rollover-prone Bronco II. Ford didn’t know it, but it had a huge hit on its hands, and the Explorer quickly became synonymous with the title Sport Utility Vehicle, or SUV.
25 years later, the Ford Explorer is in every way a better vehicle, and the new Platinum trim level adds options and opulence the original designers could never have dreamed of.
Where once cheap, hard plastic dominated the interior of the Explorer, Ford engineers now use real aluminum and ash wood to decorate the interior of Platinum trim models. An exclusive 500-watt Sony sound system surrounds passengers with high-fidelity noise, and leather-wrapped everything, from the steering wheel to the instrument panel, add new layers of luxury to the iconic SUV.
Powering the Explorer Platinum is Ford’s most-potent EcoBoost engine, the 365 horsepower 3.5 liter EcoBoost V6 from the Sport model. The 2.3 liter EcoBoost engine replaces the 2.0 liter for the 2016 model year, though the tried-and-true 3.5 liter naturally-aspirated V6 soldiers on as the base-model engine. Opting for the 2.3 liter EcoBoost can net drivers as much as 28 MPG on the highway, unheard-of levels of fuel economy for the Explorer line, while still delivering a healthy 280 horsepower (about 30 less than the same engine makes in the Mustang).
Explorer sales are up 30% compared to last year, an indication that Ford is making all the right moves in the eyes of SUV customers. Here’s hoping Ford can keep it up for another 50 years.
