As reported by our good buddy Mike Galimi over on the NMRA website, Justin Burcham of JPC Racing this week carded the quickest elapsed time in history for a Mustang in Coyote Stock trim, rolling through the quarter mile in 10.87 seconds at 123 mph behind the wheel of Joe Marini’s 2011 GT that he’s been campaigning in the brand new category this season.

Marini’s Mustang has spent its entire life as a test bed for JPC Racing and ran well into the nine’s with a naturally aspirated 318-inch stroker before Burcham turned his focus to Coyote Stock this season and transplanted a sealed Coyote Stock motor from Ford Racing to take part in the intriguing new NMRA eliminator.

The always tough Burcham got off to a sluggish start this season in Coyote Stock before turning up the proverbial wick this summer. That start allowed points leader and national record holder Joe Charles to gain a sizable advantage in the points and one that may be hard for the rest of the class to overcome. Charles currently leads the standings by 1,100 points and holds the record mark at 10.820 and 124.29 mph.

Burcham’s record-breaking performance was, of course, a purely unofficial number that occurred outside of NMRA competition, and as always, is up for debate. We’ve got our own hunch, but we’ll find out in a little over two weeks at the next stop in Columbus.
