At the end of this month Ford will officially return to endurance racing with a pair of Ford GTs prepared by Chip Ganassi Racing for the Le Mans-running GTLM class. Ford is in it to win it with the GTs, but they won’t be the only Blue Oval-badged race cars at the IMSA season opener at the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona.
Ford and Chip Ganassi racing have announced that they’ll also be entering a pair of EcoBoost Prototypes in the Daytona Prototype class, putting an all-star roster of international drivers behind the wheel. The Blue Oval is going to be hard to beat in 2016.
Ford’s EcoBoost Prototype No. 1 will be piloted by a mix of newer and veteran drivers with some impressive resumes. Two-time Le Mans winner and retired Formula One driver Alex Wurz will join 2015 WEC Champion Brendon Hartley and three-time World Touring Car Champion Andy Priaulx to add some serious experience for the No. 1 car, while newbie Lance Stroll joins the cast with hopes of making his mark at Daytona.
In the No. 2 car is an equally impressive roster of Daytona veterans who are returning to defending their 2015 victory at the Rolex 24. Scott Dixon, Tony Kanaan, Jamie McMurray, and Kyle Larson are back together for 2016 after racking up plenty of individual accomplishments over the past few racing seasons. It’s clear that with this driver lineup, Ford is planning to kick off the 2016 racing season with some big wins. Victory is always easier said and done though, and while the original Ford GT was an indomitable force, the new GT has yet to prove itself on the track in competition.
The 24 Hours of Daytona is a barometer by which Ford’s renewed racing efforts will be judged, and they certainly seem to be throwing everything they’ve got at it.
