The list of Top Picks for new cars, compiled yearly by Consumer Reports, named the 2011 Ford Mustang as tops in the ‘Sporty Car’ category. The selection has surprised some observers, who comment that it is only the second time ever that an American car has taken the top spot in this category. The Ford SVT Focus received the same accolade in 2004.
In addition, Ford Motor Company ranked as the most improved manufacturer moving up to fifth place from eleventh spot last year. The influential consumer publication recommended 10 of the 15 Ford vehicles that it tested. Recently, the Mustang GT also rated “Most Fun” to drive in the Muscle Car category.
“Ford’s been doing extremely well,” said David Champion, senior director of Consumer Reports Auto Test Center, noting its reliability has steadily improved during the last five-plus years.
According to the Detroit News, Ford spokesperson Kristen Kinley acknowledged that the “results from a reputable organization like Consumer Reports is further validation of the continued progress we’re making on the quality of our products.”
The magazine began publishing car-testing results with a report on 22 models in June, 1936. Of the group, 17 were found acceptable and both the Ford V8 Standard and the Plymouth De Luxe were nominated ‘Best Buys’ for their low prices and good performance. All models sold for less than $800 at the time.
Consumer Reports began incorporating modern-style test programs in the early 1950s. Today, responses for 1.3 million vehicles for the basis for ratings and predictions on nearly three hundred contemporary vehicles.
