Automakers have poured decades worth of research, along with millions of dollars, towards creating a comfortable driving experience in today’s automobiles. Most drivers want a quiet, smooth ride that blocks out the obnoxiousness of the outside world. Most drivers…but not all.

Ford is better that people who pony-up $23,000 for the new Focus ST will be among those relative few who want to hear their engine growl. That’s why USA Today reports that Ford borrowed a key piece of Mustang technology to help pipe in the growl of the Focus ST’s 2.0 liter EcoBoost engine.

And when we say pipe in the growl, we mean that literally. The 2011 Mustang refresh introduced a “sound tube” that directs the distinct grunt of the 5.0 engine into the engine cabin. It creates a much more visceral experience for the driver, and it sounds awesome to boot.

Ford is using the same trick on the Focus ST, which hits dealerships this spring. The Focus version of the sound pipe will be different from the Mustang version as it will be electronically controlled for a lower grunt in low gears and a quieter roar in higher gears. Sounds like just another special treat for future Focus ST owners.
