The days of North Americans hogging all the muscle car glory appear to be numbered, according to a report in Auto Express in the UK. Sources to the web site have indicated that the next Mustang will be available in the UK and in a right hand drive configuration.
Apparently, dealers there have been told to prepare for the new car, which is to top the line of UK Fords. One of the Auto Express sources is said to have indicated that, “The design studios in Europe and Australia are working on it, as well as those in America. It will be smaller and closer in spirit to the original 1964 Mustang.”
Beyond this, the usual speculation about turbocharged four cylinder engines, independent rear suspension and advanced technologies are reported. News like this must certainly be making many domestic Mustang enthusiasts nervous.
It is certainly open to question if the company’s One Ford policy is being applied a little too universally. By definition, any policy is an answer in advance of the question.
Regardless, Mustang’s flagging sales of late have done little to make it the 800-pound gorilla in the Ford lineup. The comapny also faces future questions about production at the Flat Rock, MI, assembly plant. Mazda recently indicated that it would no longer use the AAI facility once the Mazda 6 is finished. BOth cars are currently built at the facility, which is a joint venture between Ford and Mazda.
You can expect to see some of the questions answered at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show, if Ford stays true to form. A final production version is likely to be shown at the North American International Auto Show in January of 2013, with public introduction most likely scheduled for the obvious date of April 16, 2013 – the Mustang’s 50th Anniversary.
