Last year Ford was able to lay claim to being the first manufacturer to offer carbon fiber wheels on a mass-production car. Now whether or not the Shelby GT350R Mustang counts as a mass production vehicle or not depends on whom you ask, but the fact remains that those expensive and impressively light carbon fiber wheels have proven popular with buyers.
To the surprise of no one, the Blue Oval has announced that it will also be offering carbon fiber wheels on the already sold out Ford GT, albeit with some aesthetic and technical changes that make the wheels even lighter and better than before.
Standard wheels for the Ford GT will be 10-spoke 20-inch forged aluminum wheels, however, with the carbon fiber wheels being an option. Though they are the same size as the aluminum wheel, each carbon fiber wheel sheds about two pounds of unsprung weight. That helps with acceleration, cornering, and fuel economy if you can believe it. Less rotating mass means the suspension has an easier job of slinging the supercar through corners, and it takes less energy to get the wheels going in the first place, not that the 600+ horsepower GT should have any problems in that department.
Ford GT owners will also have a choice of finishes for their carbon fiber wheels, whereas GT350R owners only got a single black paint option. Those that select the carbon fiber wheel option can choose between either a matte finish, or a glossy clear coat that Ford says will showcase the carbon fiber weave.
You would think a six-figure car would come standard with carbon fiber wheels, but if you’ve got the money to lay down on a Ford GT, you probably shouldn’t pinch pennies when it comes to the wheels.
