Renting a car is not generally an adrenaline-inducing affair, as most people settle for whatever is the most affordable and practical solution to their needs. But what if you didn’t want to settle, just this once? What if, instead of a tortured, bare-bones Toyota that barely meets the qualifications of the term “car”, you could peel out of the rental car agency in a Shelby Mustang?
Well that opportunity has returned as of Memorial Day weekend because Hertz has rolled out the latest Shelby GT-H Mustang. Just 140 of these weekend warriors will be distributed to 17 Hertz rental centers at major airports in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the original Shelby GT350H.
By 1966, both Ford and Carroll Shelby knew that the Mustang was a huge hit, and together worked to capitalize on the car’s success. The 1966 GT350H Mustang opened the door to many young Americans that wanted to experience the fabled handling magic of a Carroll Shelby suspension, as they’d take the rental racers to the track for a long weekend of rough handling, returning them to Hertz with a big grin, but likely worse for the wear.
What money Hertz may have lost to those reckless weekends it regained exponentially in public relations goodwill. This time around, however, weekend warriors won’t be driving a GT350, but rather a mildly modified Mustang GT. This includes a Shelby hood with functional air intakes and air extractors for improved cooling, as well as a carbon fiber front splitter, new rockers, and a rear spoiler. The only suspension modification come from a Ford Performance handling pack that lowers the car by an inch.
Not quite the Shelby rental racer of legend, but at $399 per day, it’s eminently more affordable than buying a real ’66 Shelby GT350, which brings with it concerns about wear, tear, and long term valuation. A rental Shelby sounds like a lot less of a headache at the end of a hard weekend of racing.
