Turbos are becoming the go to power adder for enthusiasts on nearly every platform. Even at the OEM level we are seeing an increase in the number of turbocharged vehicles from the factory. With the Coyote engine platform gaining momentum among Ford fans, and the Mustang faithful, Kooks Headers has teamed up with Motiva and several other top-tier suppliers in the performance community to develop the Armageddon turbo system for the 2011-2014 Mustang GT and BOSS 302.
Kooks provides all of the exhaust and air charge plumbing for the system, including the headers which are 14-gauge 304 stainless steel. Motiva President David Rochau tells us, “What is unique about these headers is that they hold in a lot of heat, but don’t radiate much.” According to Rochau “There’s no warping or cracking with these headers, and very little deflection even at very high heat ranges.” The down pipes and dump tubes are also made from 304 stainless steel.
Tial Sport provides the 44mm MVR wastegates. A 50.5mm Tial Sport Q blow off valve dumps boost to atmosphere when necessary. Kooks also supplies the cold side plumbing, which is made from thick wall aluminum. “It’s 360-degree bead-formed on every connection so it won’t become disconnected due to high pressure,” says Rochau. Vibrant Performance provides the stainless steel T-bolts with an 11mm nut to keep the bolts from stripping. Each connector is constructed from four-ply silicone.
The intercooler is a high-flow, high-efficiency model from Fluidyne, featuring a vertical core. The intercooler features dual inlets on the bottom with a built in single 3.5-inch outlet that features a turn built into it. This feeds nicely into the main charge pipe which incorporates the mounting for the mass air flow sensor, “The turn coming out of the intercooler is really nice because it keeps a nice, straight laminar flow to go over the mass-air sensor.” The charge pipe also includes a port for water-methanol injection.
Garrett provides two GT3076R turbos to make boost, and a pre-made plumbing system by Goodridge is included for the turbo oil system.
The system comes standard in natural finish, although polishing of the compressors, charge pipe, and upper downpipes is available for at an additional cost.
Other options include, changing out to the GTX4071R, GTX3076R, GTX3576R, GT3582R, or GTX3582R turbochargers, taking horsepower capability of the system to over 1,500 in the case of the last turbo mentioned.
Rochau tells us that in testing on only 4.7 pounds of boost, the lowest power number they’ve seen the system produce is 615 hp, on a 2013 BOSS 302. “The last one we just finished before we came to SEMA on just 4.7 pounds of boost made 665 hp. The highest we’ve been so far is 1,283 hp, with 26 pounds of boost and the larger GT35R’s with pump gas and methanol injection.”
The Armageddon system is a no-cut design, meaning that owners won’t have to slice and dice their inner fenders or other parts of the engine compartment to get everything to fit. The system also includes a fabricated aluminum windshield washer bottle.
The Armageddon system will no doubt be making waves on the street and track around the world as Motiva exports many parts to other countries and regions. Kooks Headers or Motiva, as they are the master distributors for the Armageddon system.
