Most people would consider that a car cover is to protect a vehicle from the outside elements, such as the sun, wind, rain, dirt and debris, and industrial fallout. But Covercraft does more than just protect a car that is outside in the elements, they also make covers that are designed to protect vehicles that may be stored inside, such as a barn, garage, auto shop, or even the Petersen Automotive Museum.
One of the big attractions at the Petersen museum is the display of rare “vault” vehicles. The Vault is an underground storage of very rare and valuable cars that span more than 100 years in the history of the automobile. It includes cars like the famed 1967 Toyota 2000GT to a one-of-one 1925/34 “Round Door” Rolls-Royce Phantom I Aerodynamic Coupe.
While these cars are currently being stored in The Vault and renovations are happening up above, you can imagine that some dust and debris can become dislodged, and anything below becomes the unwilling victim. For this reason, Covercraft has partnered with Petersen Automotive Museum to provide more than 100 custom car covers to protect these cars.
“I appreciate the extreme care that is required to protect a rare vehicle collection of this kind,” stated Marty Lichtmann, President of Covercraft. “We worked directly with Kimberly-Clark on this project. We agreed that the Block-it Dustop fabric would be best since it’s the thickest, most dust-resistant and softest material we offer for interior vehicle protection.”
Covercraft invested nearly a year on measuring each car that needed a cover and providing a custom fit car cover to each of them, with the car identified in embroidery on the front. They also came with a customized storage bag for the cover when it’s not in use.
“Covercraft covers were the perfect solution for our rare Vault vehicle collection,” stated Dana Williamson, Collection Director for the Petersen Museum. “It was extremely important to us that the car covers we used were breathable, soft and protective. The Vault has to be ventilated, so the vehicles have to be protected from dust, dirt and other particulate matter found in both internal and external air sources. Breathability of the cover was also critical. Many of these vehicles still have the original paint, and we had to be certain there would be no issues with condensation underneath the cover.”
“The Covercraft covers also protected the vehicles from something we didn’t foresee – bits of concrete and debris falling from the ceiling onto the vehicles from the jackhammers being used on the floor above during renovation,” Williamson continued. “The covers performed beautifully even under these circumstances, and they fit like a glove.”
With other vehicles like a one-of- three 24-karat gold plated DeLorean, a 1939 Bugatti given to the Shah of Iran as a wedding present, a rare Jaguar XKSS once owned by Steve McQueen, a 1967 Gord GT40 Mark III, and a Ferrari formerly owned by Henry Ford II – a gift from Enzo Ferrari himself – you can be sure that underneath those Covercraft covers lay some very precious collectibles.
Covercraft offers more than 80,000 custom-patterned car and truck covers, and can even cover your unique or valuable vehicle – even if it’s completely custom built.
