The term “hipster” has actually been around for quite a long time, dating back to jazz fans who were so enamored by the music that they adopted the relaxed, impoverished lifestyle of many musicians. These days hipsters are more likely to be trust fund babies than genuine jazz fans, but mainstream society has become enamored with the sarcastic, nonchalant, tech-infused world of hipsters.
Perhaps that is why Ford released this fluff piece relating restomod Mustangs to the hipsters that dominate pop culture. We get what Ford is going for, we’re just not sure it flies with the Mustang demographic.
Ford’s reasoning is simple; on the outside, the Mustang is all vintage cool, much like the hipster trend of wearing classic, iconic, or ironic t-shirts from days long past. But find a hipster without their smartphone, and you’ll find a hollow husk of a human being, lost and confused by the world around them.
The hipster idea may play well with the recent trend of loading classic Mustangs and other restomods with all sorts of 21st century technologies, from MP3 players and boomin’ sound systems to modern engines, including the EFI 5.0 V8’s from Fox-body cars, as well as the newer Coyote engine.. Bigger brakes, better air conditioning systems, and even modern touchscreen devices have all been integrated into classic Mustangs, and this could give even the most sheltered hipster a taste of home in a vintage ride.
We’re not certain that Mustangs should be considered hipsters. Maybe the restomod trend plays well in the hipster arena, given the vintage look with modern comforts theme. However, unlike most hipsters who have merely adopted a style, many restomods are built to perform, and the hardcore set frequently send them to the track, on road trips, or even use them for daily drivers. This would seem to be the polar opposite of the hipster style, which is more about a look than actually being hardcore on anything.
This is one time when we think Ford is really wrong. We can’t find a reason why Mustang owners really want to be associated with hipsters? Most (real) hipsters don’t even own cars; they’re “cool” with public transport. That means more room on the highways for us!
