When Ford announced to the world that the 2013 Shelby GT500 would have 650 horsepower, auto journalists were taken aback. It seems insane, just as insane as Ford’s claim that this newest Shelby would top 200 mph. And while on paper the GT500 has the right stuff for such a top speed, seeing is believing.
Well, start believing, as Ford Racing just released this video from last June featuring the 2013 Shelby GT500 test mule on Italy’s Nardo ring. The engineers had one simple goal; don’t come back until they topped 200 mph.
And top it they did, eventually maxing out the monster Shelby at 202 mph. The famed Nardo ring is a 7.8 mile oval that allows carmakers like Ferrari and Lamborghini to max out their cars. Seeing a Ford there must have raised a few eyebrows…at least until the engineers starting getting into it.
It’s kind of incredible to see the new Shelby topping out its max speed, and even more surprising how stable it is at such incredible speeds. The engineers even tested a full ABS stop from 200 mph, just to make sure stopping was as stable as starting. Ford really went above and beyond for their latest and greatest GT500, and this video is just one example of the lengths they went to to get this Shelby right.
