Carlex Design Brings European Tastes To Classic Mustang

When it comes to raw horsepower and straight-line performance, American automakers long ago established themselves at the front of the pack. America even co-opted Europe’s love of small, sporty coupes, and then stuffed them with oversized V8s to give us cars like the Ford Mustang. But the Europeans have continued to set the bar when it comes to designing a jaw-dropping interior, and Poland-based Carlex Design has built a reputation as one of the best aftermarket interior specialists in the Old World.

So when Carlex announced that it was turning its eye for detail onto a classic Ford Mustang, we couldn’t help but be intrigued by this meshing of Old World finery with one of America’s most iconic automobiles.

You can be forgiven for not having heard of Carlex before, as they tend to specialize in high-end Euro-cars, such as the Rolls Royce Ghost, Mercedes-Benz SLS (the one with the gullwing doors) and Aston Martin DB9. On its website, Carlex describes itself as “… a place where the most sophisticated leather or Alcantara is employed in order to turn individual ideas and dreams into reality.”

We guess you could say they’re pretty heavily into what they do, which leads us to the Mustang, that looks to us to be of the 1967 vintage based on the twin side scoops just in front of the rear wheels (it was changed to a single-scoop in ‘68). Though the exterior is left well-enough alone, Carlex has gone ahead and inserted a sexy interior that puts the Mustang on par with any modern European sports sedan. From the carbon fiber steering wheel to the Alcantra seats, Carlex has brought this classic Mustang into the 21st century of interiors.

We’ve grown so accustomed to over-the-top engines and ground-hugging suspensions, but we forget that it’s the interior where we spend the most time being one with the car. Carlex has reminded us of the European aspirations the original Mustang brought to buyers, though we doubt the original Mustang’s interior designers could have imagined anything as luxurious as this.
