You know the Germans make good stuff, but have you ever thought about what’s involved in being an OEM supplier to Audi, Porsche, BMW, Ferrari, and Jaguar? Leading-edge technological innovation, ruthless quality control, and believe it or not, a close eye on production costs. BBS has always been on the forefront of both racing and street wheel manufacture, and they’ve brought that experience to the US domestic market with fitments for late model muscle cars.
What you see here is the CH-R wheel, which uses BBS’ flow-formed technology. BBS believes that there’s no one “best” way to make a wheel, and uses a mix of different techniques depending on the weight, stiffness, production volume, and even cost requirements for a particular application. In the case of the CH-R, a cast one-piece blank goes through a special process in which the rim well is continuously rolled over a cylinder at high pressure and temperatures between 300-350 degrees Celsius to re-form it into its final shape. The result is a thinner rim wall with increased density, giving the desired strength and resilience that a plain casting can’t equal.
The spoke area is then back-milled to reduce weight, and the wheels are finished in Satin Black or Brilliant Silver, with a replaceable stainless steel rim protector. The end result is a wheel that’s light, strong, beautiful, and surprisingly affordable.
