While we’re definitely fans of the British car show Top Gear, they seem to find a way to mock American muscle cars. Richard Hammond actually owns an original Shelby GT500, but when he put the latest and greatest version of it on the dyno, he was disappointed that it didn’t make exactly 500 horsepower. Did we disappoint you, Hamster?
Maybe next time, somebody can send him Steeda’s GT500. Up on the dyno, this sick-sounding Mustang made 726 horsepower to the wheels, and they didn’t even have to open up the engine.
Steeda is well known for their suspension components, and they’ve made some of the best-handling Mustangs in the world. But they’re quite the engine tuners, as this video goes to show. We’re not sure the exact year of this GT500, though it is definitely a S197 (2005-2009) Mustang. This was the era of the less-than-500 horsepower GT500’s (at least at the wheels). All Steeda had to do to boost the power was replace the stock supercharger with a 3.4 liter Whipple unit, add some 60 lb injectors, a cold air intake, shorty headers, and axle-back exhaust.
The net result put down 726 horsepower and 677 ft-lbs of torque on the dyno after some tuning. If you figure in a 15% drivetrain loss, you’re talking about over 830 horsepower at the flywheel. Plus, it looks and sounds like an absolute beast. It of course has a bunch of suspension modifications, such as adjustable sway bars, three-link trailing arms, but just listening to this monster is a pleasure. In a few more years, these cars will be plentiful and cheap, and with tuners like Steeda, this kinda of horsepower will be well within our reach.
