We’ve been following with baited breath the saga of Formula Drift champion Vaughn Gittin Jr.’s RTR-X Mustang. From the pre-SEMA build to its world debut in Las Vegas to the recent dyno run, we are watching every move this modernized 1969 Mustang has been making.
Finally though, it has all culminated in this; Vaughn Gittin Jr. finally took the RTR-X Mustang out to the track at Willow Springs, where this racing Mustang really belongs. Speedhunters was along to check out the first real track test day where Gittin put the Mustang through the paces.
With 401 horsepower and 378 ft-lbs of torque from the tuned naturally-aspirated 5.0 liter V8 on tap at the wheels, the RTR-X may not be the most powerful Mustang we’ve ever seen, but it was designed from the ground up to be a tire-shredding track monster. It’s a one-off automobile, with the very best in suspension and braking components. And Gittin got busy putting all those expensive car parts to work, shredding tires at Willow Springs.
These pictures, taken by Linhbergh Nguyen and Larry Chen, really help contrast the RTR-X Mustang against the beautiful landscape. It’s just such an awesome car, and these photos really capture the essence of this racing machine, which is built on a reproduction 1969 Mustang body but incorporates a modern engine and suspension system. We’d love to see this Mustang competing in Formula Drift. What say you, Mustang fans?
