As cars got more and more powerful during the 1980’s, many police departments suddenly found themselves outgunned in the horsepower race. Their old Crown Vics and Caprices couldn’t keep up with the fuel-injected and turbocharged cars that many criminals were buying (or stealing.) Thus many departments purchased a small number of American muscle cars for highway patrol, including the Michigan State Police, who purchased 20 1992 Mustang GT SSP patrol cars for service.
Well Hemmings Auto Blog has come across one of those ’92 Mustang GT SSP patrol cars for sale in its classified pages, and it is in absolutely pristine condition.
This particular Mustang was only used for “traffic control enforcement” and as a high performance pursuit vehicle. As such, it was only used in Michigan’s mild summers, avoiding the harsh winter climate that has claimed so many other Mustangs. The Special Service Package offered police departments a lightweight, heavy duty Mustang for running down would-be speeders and others who refuse to yield to the red-and-blues. Among the other factory modifications were an engine oil cooler, reinforced floor pans, transmission cooler, and silicone radiator plumbing.
This particular Mustang from the Michigan State Police have every single feature, sans the police computer, still aboard and fully functioning. Even better, this Mustang has just 61,500 miles on the odometer, meaning this good cop is barely broken in. Alas, it is an automatic, but it’s a pretty cool find none-the-less, even if the $11,990 asking price seems a bit steep. Would you keep it in the Michigan State Police livery, or go with something a little less attention-grabbing?
