We love us some sports wagons here at powerTV. To us, there is nothing more fun, practical, and unexpected as a high-horsepower grocery getter with room for the kids, camping equipment, and 400+ horsepower. Of course the idea of fast station wagons isn’t anything new, and back during the heyday of the muscle car wars, many wagons were offered with top-of-the-line big block engine options.
This is not one of those cars, but rather a 1966 Ford Fairlane station wagon with a 428 Cobra Jet big block swapped in. And it just so happens to be on eBay.
Back in the 60’s, over 90% of American cars were bought with a V8 engine, including the family station wagon. From the factory, this particular Fairlane wagon came with a “C” code 289 V8 engine. While no slouch, that motor has been replaced by something much bigger; a 428 Cobra Jet big block. That’s a lot of power for a grocery getter, and it is backed by a beefy C6 automatic transmission.
The wagon as a whole is very retro and might even be considered a sleeper considering how stock it looks, inside and out (besides the nice wheels.) The archaic suspension has received mild updates in the form of a Monte Carlo bar, and it even has air conditioning. Listed for the $26,900, we think the price is rather agreeable for a unique Fairlane with a Cobra Jet under the hood.
