All engines require air, fuel, and spark to make power, and the easiest way to boost power is by boosting air intake. Factory cars must adhere to rigid environmental regulations, which leaves the aftermarket for cold air intakes wide open. K&N is famous for their air filters plus intake kits, and American Muscle recently had a chance to review their “Fuel Injection Performance Kit”, or FIPK, for the 2005-2009 Ford Mustang GT.
The FIPK completely replaces the stock factory airbox and intake tube with a high quality filter and plastic components. The reusable air filter fits within a high-density plastic which is less susceptible heat, allow for more cold air to pass through the intake and into the engine. The K&N FIPK system can be used with or without a tune.
So lets talk power. The stock Mustang GT in American Muscle’s garage put down 256 horsepower and 280 ft-lbs of torque (oh how far we have come). After installing the FIPK system, which should take about an hour, and installing a 92 octane tune, the same Mustang put down 269 horsepower and 292 ft-lbs of torque to the wheels. That’s an improvement of 13 horsepower and 12 ft-lbs of torque. Not too shabby for a tune and an air intake!
