Wisdom comes with age and experience, and most of us can look back on our youth with a mix of pride and embarrassment. If we were lucky enough to own a sports car, and survive, then we learned that it is important to respect the power a car like the Mustang possesses. Even a V6 Mustang, in the wrong hands, can cause seriously harm to the driver, their passengers, and innocent bystanders, a car truly is the most deadly weapon any of us can legally own.
A 4 year-old girl was seriously injured when the Chevy Malibu she was riding in was hit hard by a 2008 Mustang, reports the Press-Enterprise. According to the report, the suspect, 20-year old Ricardo Gamez of Oceanside, California fled the scene, but was later arrested despite trying to mislead police.
The accident happened almost a month ago, on April 22nd, and initially it was thought that street racing was involved. Witnesses reported seeing the Mustang racing alongside an orange Honda Prelude, but police later concluded that this probably didn’t happen.
According to the report, four-year old Carlie Rodriguez was sitting in the Malibu with her father, waiting at a stop sign when the Mustang broadsided the car right where Carlie was sitting. The Mustang driver got out, asked if they were OK, and then fled. The Mustang was then reported stolen, but this was later discovered to be a ploy to try and conceal the identity of Gamez.
Thankfully this story has a somewhat happy ending. After two weeks in a coma, Carlie awakened and, though unable to speak, can gesture with her hands. She has been moved out of ICU, though she faces a long road to recovery. As for Gamez? May he learn a harsh lesson about respecting the power of the pony car, and the responsibility that comes from simply being a licensed driver,. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Rodriguez family for a speedy and full recovery of young Carlie.
