When it comes to finding collector cars, auctions like Mecum and Barrett-Jackson are some of your best sources. Next month, the Monterey Mecum Auction will especially be great for Mustang and other performance Ford enthusiasts as countless lots are crossing the stage under the Blue Oval. But you don’t have to take our word for it. Just look at a few of the fine Fords we found on the consignment list below.
Shelby Cobra 427 Challenge Racer
While we’ll get to the Mustangs in a minute, the first performance Ford that caught our eye was this 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 Challenge Racer. Commissioned for the 2000 CART Shelby Cobra Challenge Racing Series, this car was sold new as a Shelby fiberglass body on September 6th, 2000 without an engine or transmission for the sole purpose of building a potent racing machine.
Assembled by Finish Line Motorsports in Las Vegas, the Cobra features a Kroyer Racing Engines-built Ford 351 block bored out to 358ci, Edelbrock heads and intake manifold, a full roll cage, side exhaust, Brembo brakes, a T-10 4-speed transmission, special triangulated and reinforced chassis, and many other race-ready features.
One of just eight cars built for the series, the car went on to dominate in SCCA racing after the CART organization crumbled and the Cobra Challenge Racing Series was cancelled. This car will cross the auction block at 4:50pm Friday, August 16th. Its estimated selling price is between $125,000 and $150,000.
The next car that caught our attention is this 1964 ½ K-code Mustang. Believed to be one of the first dozen K-code cars ever built, it features a numbers-matching 289 271 hp HiPo engine, a Borg Warner 4-speed manual transmission and 3.89 rearend gear ratio.
Completed in factory coded J/85 Rangoon Red with a standard red interior, this Mustang also features the Special Handling Package, a combination of stiffer springs, firmer shocks and a front sway bar.
A pristine example of the original K-code Mustangs, this one will cross the auction block on Friday, August 16th at 2:30pm. Initial guesses on the car’s value estimate that this particular car will sell for up to $75,000.
2007 Mustang Parnelli Jones Edition Saleen
One of just 500 made, the next car on our list of must-sees at Monterey is a 2007 Parnelli Jones Edition Saleen Mustang. Designed in honor of the 1970 Boss 302 Trans-Am series race car, this gorgeous Mustang features a modified BOSS 302 400hp 3-valve V8 capable of producing 390 ft-lbs of torque, a Tremec 6-speed, 14-inch Saleen brakes and a Watts link suspension.
Listed as the 49th car in the 500-car series, this Mustang will cross the auction block at 4:10pm on Thursday, August 15th.
Paying homage to its racing relative, the car also features a shaker hood, BOSS replica wing, Minilight-inspired racing wheels wrapped in new rubber, and even a serialized dash plaque signed by both Steve Saleen and Parnelli Jones.
Speaking of modern performance Mustangs, we also found this 2008 Mustang BDX10 produced by Barber Driving Experience and Hoek’d Performance on the Monterey consignment list.
One of just 11 made, this high-performance Mustang offers a 430 rwhp dyno-tuned power plant with a 5-speed manual transmission, Borla exhaust attached to custom headers, giant Stop Tech front brakes, a fire suppression system, and BDX KM adjustable shocks. Helping the car complete its high-performance look is the specialty BDX racing liveries, rear race cage, APR front splitter and Sparco racing seats featuring 6-point harnesses.
With under 6,500 miles on the odometer, this unique and collectable Mustang will cross the auction block on Thursday, August 15th at 2:30pm.
1969 Mustang BOSS 429 Fastback
Last, but certainly not least on the list of mighty Mustangs is this astoundingly original 1969 BOSS 429 Fastback. Completely original and unrestored, this historic Mustang features its original 429 375 hp engine, 4-speed manual transmission, 3.91 Traction-Lok rearend, engine oil cooler, competition suspension and front disc brakes. As if that weren’t enough, the car only has 902 original documented miles on it.
Sitting atop its original chrome Magnum 500 wheels and Firestone Wide Oval tires, this rare BOSS 429 is so original that it even features its original truck-mounted Autolite battery, plastic-wrapped seat belts and steering wheel, and plastic covered passenger seat. This is all topped off with the car’s gorgeously preserved original Black Jade exterior paint and Black Décor interior.
Founder of Perkins Restoration, former MCA National Head Judge and current MCA Authenticity Head Judge Bob Perkins can attest to how original this Mustang is, having first judged the car in 1981. With every nut, bolt, decal and sticker still in place, Perkins has dubbed this car the most original BOSS 429 he’s ever seen.
Crossing the auction block on Friday, August 16th at 2:20pm, this one-of-a-kind collector car comes complete with its original window sticker, build sheet, and pre-delivery checklist and invoices.
As one of the most original BOSS 429s in existence, this Mustang is expected to bring in a selling bid upwards of $750,000.
There are plenty more Mustangs and performance Fords that will be auctioned off at the Monterey, California Mecum Auction August 15th through the 17th. Be sure to tune into SPEED from 12pm to 6pm Pacific Time each day to see these impressive Fords for yourself.
