Mustang Week kicked off its Lone Star state debut this week. The four-day event includes road racing, drag racing, drifting, burnouts, a huge car show, cruise-ins, and more. Centered in the Galveston, Texas, area, the event attracted enthusiasts from 47 of the 50 states and extended to enthusiasts from beyond the United States.
We are in the thick of covering Mustang Week Texas presented by Ford and LMR, so after we sort through the thousands of photos and hundreds of videos collected throughout the four-day event, we’ll bring you more extensive coverage of Mustang Week Texas in the coming days. Until then, stay tuned to the Ford Muscle and Mustang Week social media channels, and look for highlights here throughout the weekend.
Track Day
Mustang Week Texas launched at Motor Speedway Resort with the Track Day presented by Tremec. Participants driving everything from classics to the latest Mustang enjoyed parade laps and a high-performance driving experience.
In addition to runs on the big track, participants could carve up the cones on the autocross, presented by BMR Suspension.
Running in something other than Mustangs, competitors in the Kart Racing, Presented by BMR, qualified for the chance to compete against pro drivers, like RTR’s Ben Hobson (pictured) and Vaughn Gittin Jr.
Kickoff Party
After the track action, participants converged on The Spot in Galveston, Texas, for a cruise-in.
Things were buzzing as enthusiasts waited in line to register and purchase Mustang Week swag.
All-Ford Drag Day
Mustang drag racing legend and 16-time champion Mike Murillo was on the property at the All-Ford Drag Day Presented by HP Tuners at Houston Motorsports Park. He not only hosted a free drag racing clinic, but he also made a test hit in his iconic Fox Mustang race car known as “Lafawnduh.”
On the eighth-mile drag strip, the All-Ford Drag Day offered a True Street Class, Grudge racing, a Quickest Pass Challenge, and an open test ’n tune. Running in the popular True Street class was the new Nitemare F-150 pickup from Roush Performance, which the company recently introduced.
There were several drifters on hand and offering ride-alongs on the HMP oval track. Additionally, Team RTR drivers Vaughn Gittin Jr. and Ben Hobson wowed the crowd by getting slideways in their Mustang RTR demonstrators.
Also on the oval track, participants enjoyed Fun Runs around the track, while participants in the Spectator Drags category attempted to clock the quickest timed laps, and the top eight racers competed for the ultimate prize — a pizza and a 12-pack of beer in the aptly named Pizza & Beer class.
Friday Night Meet-Up
When the action ended at Houston Motorsports Park, the focus moved to Moody Gardens and the Friday Night Meet-Up presented by CJ Pony Parts. It kicked off at 6:30 p.m., but cars and spectators were lined up well in advance and ready to enjoy all the event had to offer.
Naturally, sponsor CJ Pony Parts was on hand to welcome all the participants on Friday night.
The Friday Night Meet-Up attracted more than 500 vehicles, which included several Car Club Meet-Ups, like this gathering of 2003-2004 SVT Mustang Cobras.
VMP Performance kicked off its dyno competition Friday night, and cars were already spinning the rollers of its portable chassis dyno.
Official Car Show
Mustangs invaded Moody Gardens in Galveston, Texas, for the Official Mustang Week Texas Car Show presented by LMR, and there were so many cool cars to enjoy. Among them, this insane restomod powered by a 427 big-block backed by a manual transmission held court near the Mustang Week Texas merch tent. Combined with the potent drivetrain, its wild makeover helps Helleanor live up to its reputation as Eleanor’s evil step-sister.
When was the last time you saw one, much less two, Saleen SR widebodies in the flesh? The same person owns this race car and street car pair and brought them to Mustang Week Texas. The race car competed successfully in the Grand American Road Racing Championship as part of the Tim Allen-backed RRR race team. Meanwhile, the street car is propelled by a 480-horsepower, supercharged V8.
For the first time in Mustang Week history, Ford brought out its Mustang Unleashed experience. Not only could attendees learn more about the latest Mustangs, but they could also sign up for ride-alongs in EcoBoost or Dark Horse demonstrators.
Speaking of ride-alongs, all the drifters on the property were offering tire-shredding ride-along experiences for sale at the event. Where else can you go for a ride in the performance machines you just saw turning tires into clouds?
Mustang Week Mayhem
As the Mustang Week Texas Official Car Show wound down, the action heated up as the Mustang Week Smoke Show: Fords vs. The World burnout contest kicked off the evening’s Mustang Week Mayhem. So many tires were sacrificed to entertain the crowd.
Not only did drag racing legend Mike Murillo serve as a Mustang Week Smoke Show judge alongside Vaughn Gittin Jr., but he brought out his iconic Fox drag car to the drift pad and did a burnout of his own.
As night fell, the Big Kahuna monster truck exacted revenge on a few Brand X vehicles, as it crushed them with its massive tires, and did some 360-degree burnouts of its own.
With the Big Kahuna hard-parked atop those Chevy carcasses, Team RTR drivers Vaughn Gittin Jr. and Ben Hobson drifted around the monster truck and its victims as fireworks exploded in the background to cap off an amazing day.
Cruise-In
Mustang Week Texas closed out the festivities with the Cruise-In presented by LMR, allowing us to seek out cars we might have missed previously. For example, Kenny Tyler’s 2015 Mustang GT hot-rodded by Hennessy. He picked it up for a song and enjoys dropping the hammer with the Whipple-supercharged Coyote engine under the hood. Price also loves detailing his ride, which is a good thing because this is one of four high-performance Fords with black paint that he owns.
You never know what you might see at a Mustang Week event, but the space-themed wrap on this S550 helped it stand out from the crowd.
As a follow-up to the Saturday night Smoke Show, the Mustang Week Smoke Show: Street Class offered the opportunity for regular Joes to shred tires in the Mustang Week Smoke Show: Street Class with the chance to take home a $500 prize.
The inaugural Mustang Week Texas came to a close with the car show awards, participants took home awards in a wide range of classes.
