The array of hoods in the Seibon Carbon booth caught our eye, and it wasn’t hard to see the attention to detail that goes into crafting these aftermarket body panels. Carbon fiber body panels have been gaining popularity through the years for a number of reasons. Some do it simply for aesthetics, some for aerodynamic advantages, and finally some to shave weight on their race vehicles in an attempt to gain an advantage over the competition.
No matter the reason, carbon fiber technology is readily available and we wanted to see what was new with Seibon Carobon. Ryo Inoue was happy to discuss their products with us and said, “Our full-carbon hoods are completely comprised of carbon fiber, with no fiberglass backing. It requires a lot less resin to build this way, and really saves on the overall weight.”
Seibon had a number of items on display including hoods for late-model Mustangs and Camaros, as well the raw full-carbon hood shown here which fits the 997 Porsches. While the price point is mostly for the fiberglass/carbon hoods, shown above with the glossy finish, they do offer products completely comprised of carbon fiber as Inoue mentioned above.
Due to having no fiberglass and a fraction of the resin needed in production, these hoods are about half the weight of the traditional style. When you are at the level of racing where pounds make a difference, this is certainly a viable option to shave weight.
