High Tech Injectors From DeatschWerks For Our 2013 Mustang

Our 2013 Mustang, Project Silver Bullet is on a mission to achieve 10-second quarter-mile time-slips and extreme cornering prowess, along with the good looks of a ROUSH Performance RS3 to boot. As part of the upgrades that are planned, we need to make sure our engine is getting enough fuel. To do that we’ll need to upgrade the injectors, which is why we turned to DeatschWerks for a set of their 78 lbs (800cc) fuel injectors.

DeatschWerks supplies aftermarket fuel solutions for modern muscle and high performance cars. While relatively new to the Ford Mustang market, DeatschWerks is no stranger to performance injectors having serviced the sport compact market since 2005. They’re already making waves in the Mustang market by offering a high quality product and knowledgeable customer service.

DeatschWerks offers injectors for Ford applications ranging from the mildly modified to monsters making as much as 2,000 hp depending on the fuel and setup in use.

For late model Mustang and Ford owners, DeatschWerks offers injectors in 35, 39, 42, 50, 60, 78, 88, 95, and 200 pounds per hour sizes. These injectors, depending on size and fuel type can support anywhere from 300 hp, all the way up to 2,000 hp.

Our fuel injectors, part number 18U-00-0078-8, have several features that DeatschWerks includes standard with all of their injectors. This includes a three year warranty, 100-percent drop in fitment, and dynamic flow balancing. Our new injectors are based off of the Bosch EV14, which is the same as OE on our 2013 Mustang, ensuring high compatibility.

According to David Deatsch, president of DeatschWerks, the EV14 is Bosch’s latest technology. These injectors offer extremely fast response times, and fast opening and closing. “They inject a precise amount of fuel very quickly, this is especially important with large injectors where too much fuel can cause drivability problems,” says Deatsch.

Our 78 pounds per hour replacements are based on the same Bosch EV14 design as our OEM injectors. This ensures an easy drop in fitment. The EV14 design is the latest injector technology from Bosch and is known for fast response times.

Flow Balancing

DeatschWerks flow balances all their injectors, and they do so dynamically rather than statically. According to Deatsch, the difference is that with static balancing, the injectors are typically matched only at their wide-open, maximum flow rate.

DeatschWerks dynamically balances their injectors at 2, 3, 5, and 7 milliseconds to ensure that a set is optimized throughout the full range of pulse widths the injectors operate at. Low pulse width balancing (2-3ms) provides smoother idle and cruising.  High pulse width balancing (5-7ms) provides a safer burn under heavy throttle conditions. The lower numbers represent faster on/off times, required for idle – too much fuel at idle results in a rich condition and drivability issues. All DeatschWerks injectors are matched within two-percent, ensuring that each injector’s performance keeps up with the others in the set.

Data is Everything

In the realm of high performance tuning, data is king. Deatsch tells us many tuners won’t even begin working on a custom tune unless they have the necessary data on the fuel injectors, and this is with good reason. Proper fuel injector data helps the engine calibrator dial in the best tune possible in the shortest amount of time. Without this data the tuner is relying solely on air/fuel data and his best guess.

The most up to date data is supplied via the DeatschWerks web-site. In addition to the calibration summaries and injector characterizations, several useful online tools are hosted to help owners choose the right size for their application.

We added a small amount of lubricant to the o-rings on each injector. This protects the o-rings, and makes installation easier. It will also make removal easier should the fuel rail need to come out for some reason in the future.


DeatschWerks designs their injectors application specific, as a result upgrading our injectors was a simple and straight forward swap. The nice thing on Coyote engines is that there is far less in the way when performing an injector swap than on previous fuel injected Mustangs. This makes makes accessing the injectors easier.

The entire swap takes less than an hour and involves simply disconnecting the factory injectors, relieving fuel pressure in the system and removing the fuel rail and injector safety clips. The reassembly is the exact reverse, just replacing the old injectors with the units from DeatschWerks.

We installed each injector into the rail, then carefully installed the assembly back into the intake manifold. A quick check for leaks, followed by our new Brenspeed tune and we're ready to go.

Post-install we worked with Brenspeed to update our tune, and ensure that Project Silver Bullet was ready to best utilize the new DeatschWerks injectors. As we get ready to ratchet the up the horsepower further, it’s nice to know that the injectors we have now will be able to take the demand as we begin our quest for faster ET’s.

DeatschWerks keeps up to date calibration summaries online providing tuners with the most up to date injector data possible.

Upgrading our injectors from the stock units to the new higher flowing, higher output ones form DeatschWerks will allow us to push the power limits of our stock 5.0 Coyote engine without worrying about a lean condition causing a catastrophic failure. At the same time we can maintain comfortable drivability that makes our car easy to live with on a daily basis.

On the street and at idle we can’t tell there are big injectors on board, there is no discernible difference between the car’s idle or cruising characteristics. It’s when we crank the horsepower up that we can take advantage of the additional fuel, and that is the difference we’re looking for.
