Watching live automobile auctions on television has really given us regular Joe’s an idea of how much money people are willing to pay for rare, old cars. Seeing a Boss Mustang sell for $80,000 is the norm, and when it comes to the Shelby’s, the money quickly rises into the six-figures. It does make one wonder how much that beater Fox-body we drive every day might be worth some day. Will any Fox-body ever command such princely sums?
Well, at the very least you can ask. This ’88 Saleen white-on-white convertible on the “exclusive” duPont Registry has an asking price of $89,000. Are Fox-body Mustangs coming of age, or is this Mustang slightly over-priced?
The ad claims this is Saleen #12 and was celebrity owned, though which celebrity we don’t know. This would be easy to verify if you happen to have a copy of the Saleen Book & Registry on hand. The car has been rebuilt and the supercharged engine makes 565 horsepower, which is nothing to sneeze at. This is by far one clean Fox-body Mustang, and the list of modifications is extensive.
Looking at the duPont Registry though, this Mustang is sort of floating in Limbo. The Registry (which mostly deals with more “exclusive” cars like Maseratis and Lamborghinis, only has two other Fox-body Mustangs. Neither of them are priced, though there is nothing exceptional about them other than their low-mileage. Most of the other Mustangs are modern limited-editions, or rare classics like the Boss or GT500. Now we’re not saying this car isn’t worth $89,000 to the right person…but we see a lot of other cars we’d probably consider first if we had that kind of money to throw around.
So we ask you, what celebrity would make it worth the $89,000 asking price?
