This week Ford let the bad news out of the bag; come 2016 the Blue Oval will no longer manufacture cars in Australia. After 90 years, Ford will pack up its factories and tooling, leaving 2,000 people without jobs as the company moves to import more global vehicles to the Land Down Under. That means no more Ford Falcon, the V8-powered sedan that many American enthusiasts have lusted over for years.

It also means that the Australian V8 Supercar Series will lose one of its biggest competitor vehicles, which begs the question; what will replace it? Motoring.com.au speculates that the next-generation Mustang, itself a global vehicle, could step in as the Falcon’s replacement.

The timing, after all, would be perfect. The 2015 Mustang is slated to go on sale in America next year, and Europe shortly after. The new global Mustang could even be sold in China, where currently Mustang enthusiasts must either import or build Mustangs of their own. So why not down in Australia too? After all, Ford has confirmed it will build a right-hand drive version of the Mustang, the just haven’t said where it will be sold.

Even if the Mustang isn’t sold in Oz, the proposal to add it to the roster of V8 Supercars is still strong. A paper written by a V8 Supercars board member suggests that the day of big four-door sedan racing is drawing to a close, and if the Supercar series wants to stay with the times, sports coupes must be added to the lineup.

Then again, Ford has allowed its V8 Supercar entries to dwindle to just six vehicles, and the contract with Ford Performance Racing is up for renewal. Could the Blue Oval pull out of Aussie racing as well? Or will the Mustang bring the thunder to the Land Down Under?
