Bob Kurgan and his Kurgan Motorsports AEM Mustang went to the winner’s circle at the Ultimate Outlaw Shootout, held May 28th at Piedmont Dragway. Kurgan summed up the weekend, “All in all I’m happy with my performance.” After his win Kurgan thanked race promoter and organizer, Nate and Adam Prichett. He also explained that it was thanks to his wife of 20 years, Chris Kurgan, and well as his sponsors that he could continue racing.

Kurgan’s team worked hard all day so that they could keep getting the AEM Electronics Ford turned around as the team was getting near hot lapped, but the team kept up the with the hectic pace. The Vortech supercharged entry put together a 5.01 at 145 mph 1/8th mile pass on a racetrack that presented less than perfect conditions.

Kurgan also faced some difficulties with his car during the weekend. After the first qualifier Kurgan found out that his discharge tube had been torn during the previous pass. Luckily for Kurgan, Ed Rice had a welder, and was able to get the Vortech supercharged AEM Ford back on track. “If it weren’t for Ed, I wouldn’t have been racing yesterday!” explained Kurgan.

Kurgan took the time that it takes more than just one person to drag race. It takes a whole team, as he even had to borrow the truck of Kevin Fiscus to get ice for the intercooler. Even Kurgan’s business partner was unable to go to the track due to a project at the team’s shop that had to be completed, but we are sure that he will be back at the track again soon.

Kurgan felt that the Ultimate Outlaw Shootout was a race where the X275 racers were a valued class as he exclaimed, “It was nice to be appreciated!” Kurgan continued, “Many other organizations are taking their racers for granted. These guys genuinely thanked us for coming.”
