While the price of regular unleaded gasoline continues to fluctuate, many enthusiasts are making the switch to E85 for its comparatively lower cost, and higher octane rating. There are special considerations when running this biofuel enhanced product, including the need for proper alcohol resistant seals, and a fuel pump which can provide adequate volume for the increased fuel demand of running E85. “E85 has become very popular, especially in forced induction applications, where enthusiasts are finding they can not only run a less expensive fuel, but can also pick up some significant horsepower in many cases,” says Aeromotive’s Jared Cox.

“The Phantom Flex is the next evolution of our Phantom product line,” says Cox. The pump is rated for 450 liters per hour of fuel flow. The Flex Phantom is compatible with both E85 and gasoline. In naturally aspirated carbureted applications on gasoline, the Flex Phantom can support as much as 1,300 hp. Carbureted with forced induction and gasoline this pump can support 950 hp. When running E85 fuel and a carburetor, the Flex Phantom can support 700 hp in forced induction applications. With EFI the system will support 550 hp with forced induction.
“The Phantom Flex will virtually fit into any tank, it’s adjustable from 6 to 11 inches, and we offer an extension kit that goes all the way up to 20 inches,” says Cox. The Phantom Flex comes with a larger in-tank baffle than its Phantom brothers to keep up with the demand of this high flowing pump. “We had to engineer a bigger basket to support this pump, this particular one will suck the basket we use on our other Phantom applications dry.”
Combining E85 capability with the Phantom concept, Aeromotive has created another innovative design that is sure to be a hit with consumers. SEMA seems to agree, as they chose the Phantom Flex as this year’s new product winner in the Street Performance category.
