Video: Mustang Throttle Sticks Wide Open At 7,000 RPM At The Track

Probably the worst panic-stricken feeling in the world is when your car’s throttle sticks. That’s because when it does, it’s usually at wide open throttle. Unless your car does it every time you hammer down, it catches you by surprise. To hear your engine at full song and your foot isn’t in the water pump, that’s cause for panic.

This Cobra seems to have a smaller blower pulley, an aftermarket shifter, and street tires. The car spins at the top of first gear, and all the way through second, so the driver short-shifts into third gear. When trying to hit fourth gear it seems the transmission doesn't want to go in gear. We think by then the throttle is stuck, which causes the missed shift. Factory T56s won't shift at 7,000 rpm. Had this car had a Tremec Magnum, the transmission probably would've gone into fourth, but then what. It's probably a good thing the throttle stuck when it did since the driver had plenty of room to bring the car to a stop.

This author had a friend with a 1966 Tri-Power GTO that every time he went WOT, the throttle would stick, but he knew it was going to happen so he would just shut it off, coast to a stop, and fix the linkage each time. For the driver of this Cobra, however, it seems this could’ve been the first time he had experienced this issue with the car.

He seems to not notice it at first, but then catches on to what’s happening. He then does the worst thing you could ever do – he takes the key completely out of the ignition, rendering his Cobra without any steering. Probably the best thing about this scenario is that it happened at the track, but if the driver would’ve left the key in, and in the accessory position, he could have steered the car off the track, and onto return road.

The driver committed the cardinal sin by taking the key out of the ignition. If the throttle sticks in your street car, turn the ignition off, but leave the key in the accessory position so you'll still be able to steer the car off the track.

Instead, it looks like he stops at the end of the track to get out and fix the throttle cable. That would bring the action to a stop since most tracks won’t let any cars make a pass if someone is on top end.

Once the driver does get the car stopped, his response is priceless, He seems to sarcastically utter the word, “Awesome.”
