CNN was ahead of the curve in 2010 when it placed our beloved Fox Mustang on its Top Ten Collector Cars under $5,000. It was actually Hagerty insurance who came up with the list, and had the Fox Mustang on it. Specifically, Hagerty keyed in on 1985-’93 5.0-liter HO Mustangs. We guess the 1979-’84 models get no respect.

However, none of us needed CNN, or Hagerty to tell us the Fox Mustang is a collectible car. We’ve been collecting them for years, we just didn’t know we were “collecting them.” We like them for the same reason they’re on this list. They’re inexpensive, fun to drive, and easy to modify/upgrade.

We wonder if one day all Fox Mustangs are either race cars like Anthony Heard’s coupe…

In 2010, CNN had an average Fox Mustang valued at $3,000. Looking at values today, 6 years later, that number is likely to get you a well-worn example. You can find a $3,000 Fox Mustang, but the price of a decent Fox is more like $4,000 these days.

The scary part for us is the other cars on this list. Other mentions include the 1975-’80 AMC Pacer, 1974-’80 Triumph Spitfire, 1975-’78 Datsun 280Z, 1989-’91 Taurus SHO, 1977-’83 BMW 320i, 1968-’76 Volkswagen Beetle, 1986-’88 Pontiac Fiero GT, 1979-’81 Fiat Spider 2000, and the 1956 Buick Roadmaster Sedan. And the worst part is, the Fox Mustang had the lowest value out of all these cars. A Fiero?!?! An AMC Pacer?!?! Some of the other cars on the list…okay, we can deal with them having higher values, but c’mon, a Pacer?!?!

…or show cars like Jeremy Aliaga’s Coyote-swap hatch? You hardly see a Fox Mustang on the road, anymore.

What we’ve really noticed these days when it comes to Fox Mustangs on the market, they’re either $3,000 buckets, or $8,000 cars that should be had for $5,000. Either way, it shows the value on Fox Mustangs is starting to go up, and will probably continue to do so.

If you have always wanted a Fox Mustang, you better get one now before prices really get out of hand.
